Lívia Nolasco-Rózsás (UCL) came to ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (HES-SO), and joined Patrick Keller and Erika Marthins at the beginning of July ’24, to pursue the first steps in the interdisciplinary work of cataloguing, mapping and assessing past major digital exhibitions.

The aim of this study, which will last until early next year and is planned to be the first milestone of Paik Replayed, before we dive into creating an exhibition, is to better understand what “makes” digital exhibitions. The purpose is to understand their different types, media, technologies, structures and infrastructures, as well as their relationship with the material world.

The study also considers the role of artworks – in particular some cases by N. J. Paik – as mediators among the various actors involved in these constructs.

During this survey, we consider the period from 1993 (Mosaic browser) to the present day.
